Sie bietet einen kritisch durchgesehenen Text, für dessen Herstellung alle im 17. Jahrhundert erschienenen Drucke und die Neudrucke der Folgezeit herangezogen wurden. Der Kommentar erläutert die Dramen nach den unterschiedlichen Wissensgebieten, die Gryphius als universalgelehrtem Poeten vertraut waren und deren Kenntnisse er häufig verwertete. Berücksichtigt wurden auch die kontroversen Meinungen der umfangreichen Gryphius-Forschung. Insgesamt bietet der Neudruck zum kritischen Text den bislang umfassendsten Kommentar zum dramatischen Werk des Dichters.
