自从学习冥想以来，我开始陆续写下一些小文章用以记录本人的体验与发现。然而，随着我对冥想的认识不断加深，我逐渐发觉其实体验是非常个人化的东西，也就是说，每个人的冥想体验都可能不同。不过，有一样东西却是永恒不变的，是不因人而异的，那就是冥想的生物学本质，这也正是我试图发现的全部内容。现在，我就把我的这些粗浅的"发现"汇集成一个小册子，供大家交流参考，批评指正。
另外，这本小册子的主旨在于讨论冥想的科学本质，并不在于教导冥想的具体方法。不过，如果你真的理解了冥想的本质，那么你就会对各种各样的冥想方法有一个更加清晰的认识；你就知道为什么会有这么多看似不同的冥想方法，以及它们之间是否存在某种内在的共通之处；你也就会明白哪种方法更"好"，或者说更适合你；你还会明白冥想到底会给我们带来哪些益处，以及为什么会带来这些益处；等等一系列问题的答案。
还有，本文的主旨在于讨论冥想的生物学本质，并不在于讨论由冥想衍生出来的哲学以及宗教话题。这是因为，就像冥想的体验是非常个人化的东西一样，由冥想所引发的哲学思考和宗教感悟也是五花八门，因人而异的。更主要的是，在我看来，这些思考与感悟之中的绝大部分（如果不是全部的话）并无根本上的矛盾与冲突，即使表面上有所不同，也并不存在正确与错误，或者高深与肤浅的差别。
