Als "Tertium comparationis" wird eine kommunikative Definition der Modalität entwickelt; so können unabhängig von Übersetzungsvergleichen Abtönungsformen identifiziert werden. Es wird weiterhin gezeigt, dass die Abtönungsformen, seien sie Partikeln oder nicht, diachron in einem spezifischen Sprachwandeltyp rekrutiert werden.
