The frequent presentation of the integration of Islam as a task that still needs to be shouldered conceals the multiple ways in which Islam and Muslims are already part of European social, political and institutional spaces. The way the social existence of Islam in Europe unfolds can be explored in the light of three thematic concerns: organizational forms, public recognition and religious life. This book has two main goals: First, it seeks to analyze how European immigration societies and their institutions have responded to the settlement of Muslim immigrants, and how their incorporation has been facilitated, contested and negotiated. Second, the book focuses on how Islam and Muslim immigrant communities in Europe have adapted to the cultures and institutional structures of their host societies and how they have resisted such changes.
