Notre Lucius, curieux de pénétrer les mystères de la magie, se retrouve transformé en âne, et bien des vicissitudes s'annoncent à lui pour retrouver sa condition humaine. Nerval voyait dans ce roman une "poétique réalisation des phénomènes les plus frappants du cauchemar". Mais il faut aussi reconnaître qu'Apulée s'est bien amusé en route, et nous invite à en faire de même. Suivons-le dans ses variations sur cet âne tantôt lubrique, tantôt savant. La vision grotesque d'un homme transformé en âne engage une vision du monde : l'instabilité générale, liée aux variables humeurs des dieux et aux caprices de la Fortune, détermine un remue-ménage universel. Cette mobilité métaphysique se traduit esthétiquement par un pot-pourri de genres, de tons, un brassage d'évènements et de personnes, qui constituent tout l'intérêt de ce surprenant roman.
