Durch die Arbeiten des Mineralogen Wilhelm Karl Ritter von Haidinger (1795 -1871) kam der Geologie in Österreich in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts eine größere Bedeutung zu. Nach dem Studium bei Friedrich Mohs in Graz und an der Bergakademie Freiberg sowie Forschungsreisen durch Europa übernahm Haidinger ab 1840 die Leitung der Mineraliensammlung der Hofkammer. Im Jahre 1849 wurde durch Kaiser Franz Joseph die eigenständige `kaiserlich-königliche Geologische Reichsanstalt` mit Haidinger als erstem Direktor gegründet (heute Geologische Bundesanstalt).Zwei Jahre zuvor hatte der Wissenschaftler die erste geognostische Karte des österreichischen Kaiserreichs herausgegeben.
