Im vierten Jahr des Zweiten Weltkriegs, als "Gesichte des apokalyptischen Sehers grauenvolle Wirklichkeit wurden", entstanden im Amsterdamer Exil Max Beckmanns Lithographien zu den "Offenbarungen des Johannes". Die Zeichnungen wurden nach Deutschland geschmuggelt, zusammen mit dem Luther-Text in kleiner Auflage gedruckt, fünf Exemplare hat Beckmann von Hand koloriert. Die Vision der "Apokalypse" vermittelte dem Künstler Hoffnung und Trost: "Es scheint, dass ich weiterleben soll." Die vorliegende Ausgabe dieses Buchjuwels enthält den vollständigen Text, die farbigen Illustrationen Beckmanns und ein Nachwort von Annette Schavan. §"Das Ende naht, die Verwandlung kommt näher, was tue ich noch hier, ganz nah am Meer?"
