Appalachian Spring entstand 1943-44 als "Ballett für Miss Martha Graham" als Auftragskomposition der Elisabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation. Uraufgeführt wurde es von Miss Graham und ihrer Kompanie am 30. Oktober 1944 in der Libarary of Congress (Washington, D.C) während des Coolidge Festivals.Die vorliegende Version ist die für ein Kammerensemble aus 13 Instrumenten, die eine verdichtete Form des ursprünglichen Balletts darstellt (und identisch ist mit der Suite für Symphonieorchester). Darin werden die wichtigsten Merkmale des Werkes beibehalten, es wird aber auf die Passagen verzichtet, die vorrangig choreographischen Zwecken dienten.Appalachian Spring erhielt 1945 den Pulitzer-Preis für Musik und wurde in dieser Spielzeit vom Music Critics Circle of New als herausragendes Werk für Musiktheater ausgezeichnet.
