The Korean peninsula is one of the most heavily militarized regions in the world. A significant factor in the long-term conflict between North and South is the presence of nearly 30,000 U.S. soldiers in the area. This book explores the social frictions that U.S. bases have caused in South Korea, where the entertainment districts next to American installations have come under much scrutiny over the last few decades. Crimes committed in G.I. entertainment areas have been amplified by an outraged public as a stand-in for the uneven relationship between the United States and the small East Asian nation. Schober provides an ethnographic history of these controversial zones of encounter in and near Seoul. Edging closer to the lives of soldiers, sex workers, and anti-base activists, she gives a comprehensive introduction into the social, economic and political factors that have contributed to the tensions over U.S. bases in South Korea.
