For twenty years, one kingdom stayed standing while the most powerful state on earth swallowed every neighbor it had. It was not saved by a bigger army. It was saved by the mind of a young queen the world would spend the next two thousand years remembering almost entirely wrong.

Most kids meet Cleopatra, if they meet her at all, as eyeliner and a snake: a beautiful schemer on a golden couch. This is the queen the record shows. She was raised in the palace beside the Great Library of Alexandria, could answer visitors in as many as nine languages, fed a kingdom through famine, built a fleet, and kept Egypt independent through alliance and cunning while Rome absorbed the kingdoms around it.

Your child follows the whole life, from a princess exiled by her own brother's court to the last pharaoh of Egypt. Then the book does the thing other versions skip: it asks where the famous legend came from, and shows it was built mostly by the man who defeated her. Your child comes away with the real Cleopatra, and with a first feel for how history gets written, and by whom.

What this version does: the full life, not the legend. It is honest with your child about how we know what we know, and about how a brilliant ruler got painted over as a pretty villain.

Ages 6 to 10 · about 7,100 words · black-and-white line-art illustrations · independent and guided reading. Page count, reading level, and illustration count confirm at final proof.

A note for parents. Real ancient history with its hard edges named, not dramatized: war, a young king who drowns as his army flees, and the defeat and deaths of Antony and Cleopatra at the end. Antony takes his own life; how Cleopatra died is left, as the oldest source leaves it, an open question. Nothing is graphic.

Part of the nüNERD Learning System. At 6–8, they're reading with growing independence; you're still there for the hard words. At 8–10, they're fully solo, and the topics you introduced years ago click into place. nüNERD topics come in age-appropriate versions, each built for how children actually think at that stage.

Also available for Ages 0–4 (A Royal Welcome) and Ages 3–7 (The Cleverest Queen), plus a companion Secret Nerd edition for Ages 9–12.
