Son baptême, sous l'impulsion décisive de son épouse Clotilde, est un événement capital : il permet la christianisation de l'Europe. Ses fils, après le concile réuni par leur père en 511, l'année de sa mort, parachèvent son oeuvre grandiose mais se lancent dans des luttes fratricides. C'est ainsi qu'à travers les tumultes de leurs règnes se dessine la France. Chef de guerre victorieux - Soissons (486), Vouillé (507) -, homme politique avisé, protecteur du catholicisme, Clovis est, en Occident, l'héritier des empereurs de Rome. Il est aussi la préfiguration de Charlemagne.
