Un jour de janvier 1975, Jean Meckert est allongé sur un lit de La Pitié-Salpêtrière. Il a été trouvé inanimé dans une rue de Belleville. Sorti des épreuves de l'hospitalisation qui n'effacent pas les séquelles de deux heures de coma, il veut comprendre ce qui le laisse ainsi anéanti. Commence alors une lente enquête et une profonde méditation sur son passé, puis naît peu à peu l'idée d'un roman dont le narrateur serait un écrivain devenu amnésique. Abandonnant ses habituels personnages de série noire, le romancier choisit de faire de l'enfant qu'il fut, et que la mémoire a gardé intact alors que le souvenir des événements récents a disparu, le protagoniste de son prochain ouvrage. La fiction se mêle intimement aux réalités saillantes de son existence, Jean Meckert faisant de sa biographie l'essence même de Comme un écho errant. Terminé moins d'une dizaine d'années avant la mort de l'auteur, ce roman est resté inédit jusqu'à ce jour.
