Compy (Competence) Ames overcomes an isolated childhood, parental and professional prejudice, and her own unruly temper to become a lady surgeon in the 1940ss. She loses the man she loves to her glamorous sister, Bonnie. He in his turn loses his most precious possession and it is Bonnie, not Compy, who goads him into regaining his self-respect.
