Wer sind die Ainu?§Anthropologische, archäologische und linguistische Erkenntnisse der letzten Jahre zeichnen ein faszinierendes Bild der japanischen Ureinwohner, die mit der Gründung des Meiji-Staates (1868) zwangsassimiliert wurden: Man nahm den Ainu die Jagd- und Fischgründe, verbot ihre Sitten und das Stammesrecht, gab ihnen japanische Namen und entfremdete die Kinder von Sprache und Tradition. Mediziner raubten über 1.660 Gebeine aus Ainu-Gräbern; aber auch in Europa war das Interesse an den "haarigen Kurilen" groß. Erst 2008 wurden die Ainu als Ureinwohner Japans offiziell anerkannt.§Gespräche zur Restitution von Gebeinen und zu Fragen der Ainu-Identität runden den Band ab.
