Zunächst Lehrer und Professor an einem Gymnasium in Berlin, wurde er im Jahre 1865 Nachfolger von Böckh auf dem Lehrstuhl für griechische Philologie an der Berliner Universität. Vorliegendes Buch ist eines seiner Hauptwerke.
