Er hat zahlreiche Bücher zu deutsch-amerikanischen Themen verfasst, unter anderem auch deutsche Lehrbücher für amerikanische Schulen. Für das vorliegende Werk sammelte und bearbeitete er deutsche Erzählungen, Schilderungen, Sagen und Gedichte, die Themenbereiche strecken sich von den Germanen über deutsche Auswanderer über zahlreiche Kaiser bis zum deutschen Bund. In dem Anhang "Die Deutsch-Amerikaner" geht der Autor noch einmal ausschließlich auf die Einwanderung der Deutschen in Amerika und deren Spannweite ein. Dies ist ein sorgfältig bearbeiteter Nachdruck der in Wisconsin erschienenen Ausgabe von 1902.
