Der Jurist Walter Serner (1889-1942) stammte aus einer böhmisch-jüdischen Familie und gehörte zunächst der dadaistischen Bewegung an, eher er sich dem Schreiben artifizieller Kriminalromane zuwandte. "Die Tigerin", 1925 veröffentlicht, ist Serners bekanntestes Werk. Angesiedelt in der französischen Halbwelt wird die bizarre Liebesgeschichte des Hochstaplers Fec und der schönen Prostituierten Bichette, genannt "die Tigerin", erzählt. Wegen seiner (absichtlichen) moralischen Indifferenz und der expliziten Schilderung sexueller Aktivitäten erregte der Roman bei der Veröffentlichung einen Skandal. Serner wurde 1942 bei Riga von den Nazis ermordet; seit 1984 wird ihm zu Ehren in Berlin jährlich der Walter-Serner-Preis für Kurzgeschichten verliehen.
