Trotz vieler Unklarheiten vor allem bezüglich Datierung und Lokalisierung ist die Wiener Genesis ist eine der bedeutendsten erhaltenen Handschriften der Spätantike. Dank ihres umfangreichen Erhaltungszustands, ihrer prachtvollen Ausstattung, dem ungewöhnlich großen Bilderanteil und vor allem ihrer einmaligen Darstellungsweise ist sie für die Forschung von besonderem Interesse.
