Der aus Österreich stammende Hermann Bahr (1863 1934) setzte sich als Schriftsteller und Kritiker vehement für die neu entstehenden Kunstrichtungen um die Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert ein, was ihm vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg den Ruf einbrachte, ein "Prophet der Moderne" zu sein. Galt sein Interesse zunächst dem Naturalismus und der Wiener Moderne, wandte er sich schließlich dem aufkommenden Expressionismus zu. Der vorliegende, 1916 veröffentlichte Text gilt als Bahrs letzter wesentlicher Beitrag zur modernen Kunst. Bahr übersiedelte 1922 von Wien nach München, wo er 1934 starb.
