Fight Night

From ancient wrestling contests and Greek pankration to bare-knuckle prizefighting, Olympic boxing, Muay Thai stadiums, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, modern mixed martial arts, and the global pay-per-view age, Fight Night: The History of Boxing and Combat Sports tells the sweeping story of humanity's oldest competitive test: controlled combat.

This fact-based narrative traces how fighting evolved from ritual, military preparation, local spectacle, and public honour into regulated sport shaped by rules, weight classes, commissions, promoters, television, streaming platforms, and global audiences. It follows the rise of boxing from the prize ring to the heavyweight crown, the social meaning of champions such as Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao, and Canelo Álvarez, and the expansion of combat traditions through judo, wrestling, karate, kickboxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and MMA.

The book also explores the modern fight-night world: the UFC, Pride, Bellator, ONE Championship, women's combat sports, crossover events, influencer boxing, safety debates, judging controversies, weight cutting, fighter pay, and the enduring appeal of one-on-one competition. Written in a polished, accessible narrative style, this is a complete history of the ring, the cage, the mat, the crowd, and the athletes who step forward when the bell rings.
