Hugo Ball (1886 1927) war neben Tristan Tzara, Hans Arp und Marcel Janco einer der Gründer des Cabaret Voltaire in Zürich, aus dem die dadaistischen Bewegung hervorgehen sollte. Zuvor hatte Ball als Dramaturg in München gearbeitet und journalistische und avantgardistische Texte veröffentlicht; 1915 emigrierte er in die Schweiz. Balls Spezialität waren dadaistische Lautgedichte, bald jedoch wandte sich der Autor vom Dadaismus ab und dem Katholizismus zu. "Flametti", seinen ebenso unterhaltsamen wie grotesken Roman aus dem Varietémilieu, veröffentlichte er 1918.
