Der aus Wien stammende Gustav Meyrink (1868-1932) war zunächst Leiter einer Prager Bank, bevor er sich ab 1905 der Schriftstellerei zuwandte. Sein bis heute bekanntester Roman ist der in Prag spielende "Golem". Meyrinks Spezialität waren fantastische Stoffe, die er virtuos mit antibürgerlicher Satire und schwarzem Humor zu verbinden verstand. Der Erzählungsband "Fledermäuse", 1916 veröffentlicht, ist ein besonders beeindruckendes Beispiel für dieses Talent. Mit zunehmendem Alter wandte sich Meyrink immer mehr spiritistischen Themen zu und konvertierte zum Buddhismus. Meyrink ist auch als Übersetzer, u. a. von Dickens und Rudyard Kipling, hervorgetreten.
