Revised and expanded second edition. Dublin can be proud of its iron heritage, ranging from cast-iron and wrought-iron building structures, bridges, railway stations, ornate street lamp-posts, public bandstands, pillar letterboxes, railings and gates, public glasshouses, and the humble manhole cover. The 19th century was the heyday of the foundries and ironworks, and the early 20th century to a lesser extent, but such skilled industries are now lost, although leaving behind many mementos. This illustrated book describes the many iron foundries, mostly Irish, but some British, and gives examples of their work.
