After reaching the Pacific, he had a chance to work his way to Australia on an oil tanker as a cabin boy and cooks helper. Jim traveled the world, grew into a man while working on ships, both steam and sail. He joined the Army and fought the Morro tribes in the Philippines and then fought in World War I, in France. After the war, he built track for the railroads in the west.
