Als Maler, Bildhauer, Zeichner und Dichter war Max Ernst (1891-1976) einer der charismatischsten Mitbegründer von Dada und Surrealismus. Sein Werk in zahlreichen Kunstgattungen und Techniken, die von Film, Malerei und Collage bis zur Frottage und Grattage reichen, war geprägt von einem unablässig experimentierenden Geist. Ernst war Initiator der Kölner Dadagruppe und ab den 1920er-Jahren einer der Wegbereiter des Pariser Surrealismus. Seine traumartige Bildsprache inspirierte und verstörte zugleich. Nach der Emigration in die USA in den 1940er-Jahren kehrte er 1953 nach Frankreich zurück. Auf der Biennale von Venedig 1954 und mit einer spektakulären Retrospektive des New Yorker Guggenheim Museums feierte die Kunstwelt den Ausnahmekünstler bereits zu Lebzeiten. Seine Geburtsstadt Brühl bei Bonn hat ihm ein großes Museum eingerichtet.As a painter, sculptor, draughtsman and poet, Max Ernst was one of the most charismatic protagonists of Dada and Surrealism. His work in numerous genres and innovative techniques - from film and painting to collage and frottage - was marked by an incessantly experimental spirit. Ernst was the initiator of the Cologne Dada group and, together with his life-long friends Paul Éluard and André Breton, a pioneer of Parisian Surrealism. His dreamlike visual language is both inspiring and disturbing.
