Die MiG-23 entstand zur Zeit des Kalten Krieges in der damaligen Sowjetunion und war, nach der amerikanischen F-111, das zweite jemals serienmäßig gebaute und in Einsatz gestellte Schwenkflügelflugzeug der Welt. Die einsitzige Maschine war neben der MiG-21 das erfolgreichste in der UdSSR produzierte Kampfflugzeug und wurde in über 40 Länder exportiert bei einer knapp 20-jährigen Produktionzeit. In zahlreichen Konflikten kam sie zum Einsatz und bis heute ist das Muster noch bei einigen Luftwaffen aktiv. Auch die NVA nutzte die MiG-23 und erhält im Buch ein eigenes Kapitel.
