José María Narváez (Cádiz,1768ùGuadalajara, México, 1840) fue un marino y explorador español que es conocido sobre todo por sus viajes por el noroeste del Pacífico. En 1788 participó en una expedición a las costas de Alaska que logró confirmar la presencia rusa en la región y en 1791, como comandante de la goleta Santa Saturnina, encabezó la primera exploración europea del estrecho de Georgia. Cartografió el interior de tres grandes ensenadas en la costa oeste de la isla de Vancouver, descubrió un vasto mar interior hacia el este (Salish Sea), trazó enteramente el golfo, realizó el primer contacto con los aborígenes de la zona y fundó la que sería la ciudad más grande del oeste de Canadá: Vacouver,
