Olive, After: A Novella

Olive is a small black cat with a white chest and amber-green eyes, and she rules her kingdom with the impassive authority of someone who has never once doubted her place in the world. Her domain: a single-story house, a couch by the front window, a bird feeder that provokes her, a neighbor's dog she has spent years studying and declining to understand. Her humans come and go on a schedule she has memorized down to the sound of the key in the lock.

Then one October evening, the sky to the northeast turns white. The house shakes. Her humans don't come home.

Olive, After is a quiet apocalypse told entirely through the consciousness of a cat who cannot name what has happened, cannot grieve in the human sense, and cannot stop waiting. As days become weeks, Olive maintains her routines with an animal faithfulness that is both heartbreaking and precise - the feeder clicks at seven and at five, the armchair by the front door is where she has always waited for them, and so that is where she waits. The catastrophe remains unnamed. The loss is not.

Told with humor, restraint, and devastating emotional accuracy, this novella asks what it means to be loyal to people who are no longer there - and what it looks like when the only creature left who loved them finally, quietly, walks out the door.
