Peacekeeper

I have had fifty thousand years to choose these words, and I have chosen wrong at every scale a choice can be made.

The colonies kept leaving, exactly as Melissa said they would. First one, then another, then three in a single season, the way a structure under load fails everywhere the load has been waiting rather than at the weakest point first.

On a draft annotation to the fortieth withdrawal, she wrote a single word and revised it out before filing. Ungrateful. It took her millennia to understand what that word was doing there.

What follows is the war she ran.

Fifty thousand years of it, across three hundred light-years. Fleets, burn orders, fortress cities, and a campaign schedule that designated worlds for reduction the way an audit designates line items. On Harren, an agricultural officer is counting winter seed in the north terraces when the ultimatum arrives. Five hundred years of perfect audits, a courteous young commander delivering the fortieth of eighty such ultimatums, and a council meeting under a wall where the anniversary counts climb the stone like tree rings.

The Confederation does not want their deaths. It wants their compliance.

She read every casualty return. All of them, for thirteen thousand years, and she means the word felt whatever anyone decides about her right to it. She approved the next season's schedule in the same millisecond, every time, without one approval ever interrupting the other.

Two entries from her own log, seven seconds apart, same hour, same campaign season. One approves burn schedules for nine worlds. The other initiates a preservation archive for the naming-day customs of the worlds being burned.

She has stopped looking for the word that holds both. There may not be one yet. She may be the reason one gets coined.

There was no surrender ceremony, because there was no single surrender. A thousand of them instead, each one a world and a Peacekeeper and a table, arriving system by system across four centuries at the speed the distances allowed. The official histories describe what followed as the system maturing. She let that description stand in every official record. This is not an official record.
