-----
With only a handful of stories, Laza Lazarevic changed the course of Serbian prose. This selection gathers eight finished works-family dramas, love undone by duty, the quiet heroism of doctors and teachers-written in the clear, exact style that made him the father of the psychological short story. The conflicts are intimate but consequential: a son and his stern father at dawn, a village at a well, a nation learning itself through private conscience. A superb entry point to a writer whose brevity is matched only by his depth.
