El districte de Sant Andreu s'articula al voltant del nucli històric de l'antic municipi de Sant Andreu de Palomar, annexionat a Barcelona el 1897, un barri que encara avui conserva bona part del seu ambient de poble i una bona col·lecció de restes del seu paper industrial. Als dos extrems del carrer Gran de Sant Andreu es troben Navas i la Sagrera, el vell barri industrial de Sant Martí de Provençals ara en plena transformació urbana per les obres de l'alta velocitat, i la Trinitat Vella, un petit turó encerclat entre autopistes i un gran parc. Resseguint la llera del riu Besòs, es troben tres joves barris nascuts el segle XX: l'antic polígon del Baró de Viver, el polígon industrial que envolta el Bon Pastor, i el barri del Congrés i els Indians.
