Henry James, 1883 John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) est un des artistes américains les plus célèbres de sa génération. Alors qu'il est adulé aux États-Unis et au Royaume-Uni, son nom et son oeuvre restent largement méconnus en France. C'est pourtant à Paris que Sargent s'est formé, a connu ses premiers succès et a exécuté certains de ses plus grands chefs-d'oeuvre. Au début de sa carrière, entre 1874 et 1884, le jeune peintre alors installé dans la capitale côtoie nombre d'artistes, d'écrivains et de mécènes éclairés. Au sein de l'étourdissant monde de l'art parisien, il forge son style virtuose et déploie son talent hors du commun. Cette période restera sans doute la plus décisive et la plus vibrante de sa carrière.
