Self-ligating brackets by definition do not require an elastic or wire ligature but have an inbuilt mechanism that can be opened and closed to secure the archwire. They are supposed to be advantageous in that they provide greater patient comfort, reduced friction between bracket and arch wire, shortened treatment time and reduced chair time.
