A mentally impaired man whose mother has a mysterious past runs into trouble with the police, and a simple identity check fails to reveal their identity. The very elderly mother dies, and the post-mortem reveals sensational findings. After a leak, the press are curious and frantic to obtain more on the post-mortem results. As a consequence, the police panic and redouble their efforts to find out who the pair really are, leading to an in-depth international search which traces the mother and son's origins to a foreign country. Finally, the publicity leads to an international diplomatic dispute over accusations of severe physical abuse within the Church in the 1970s.
