Goethes Novellensammlung erschien zuerst 1795 in Schillers Zeitschrift "Die Horen". Hintergrund der Sammlung ist das Vordringen französischer Revolutionstruppen im Jahr 1793 in die linksrheinischen Gebiete, vor denen die Baronesse von C. mit einigen Freunden und Hausangestellten geflohen ist. Innerhalb dieser Rahmenhandlung erzählen sich die Flüchtlinge sieben Geschichten, davon zwei Schauer-, zwei erotische und schließlich zwei moralische Geschichten. Höhepunkt der ursprünglich wohl umfangreicher geplanten Sammlung ist das berühmte "Märchen", die letzte Geschichte; das von Goethe absichtlich schwer verständlich gestaltete, antikisierende Kunstmärchen gilt als frühes Beispiel symbolistischen Erzählens.
