Thomas Schuler begibt sich auf Spurensuche und erzählt anhand der heute noch erhaltenen Zeugnisse die Geschichte Bayerns in der Zeit der Französischen Revolution. Wir sind auf einem Vulkan, so fasste Kronprinz Ludwig, der spätere König Ludwig I. und ein großer Napoleon-Hasser, die Situation Bayerns unter dem Korsen zusammen. Tatsächlich veränderte sich Bayern zu dieser Zeit in zuvor ungeahntem Tempo. Zugleich zog Napoleon die Ressourcen des Landes erbarmungslos für seine Feldzüge heran. Zahlreiche Bayern ließen in Russland ihr Leben. Spannend und anschaulich führt dieses Buch durch die ereignisreichen Jahre zwischen 1789 und 1815, lässt vor den Augen des Lesers Schlachten, diplomatische Winkelzüge sowie das oftmals bittere Erleben der bayerischen Bevölkerung wiedererstehen und zeigt die vielfältigen Bezüge dieser Geschichte zur Gegenwart. Am Ende wechselte Bayern gerade noch rechtzeitig die Seiten, so dass der Tanz auf dem Vulkan doch noch ein gutes Ende nahm.
