Als Heinrichs Onkel von Franzosen ermordet wird, sieht Heinrich darin eine gute Gelegenheit einen Krieg mit Frankreich zu beginnen, um auch dort auf den Thron zu gelangen. Henry VIII. ist entschlossen, seine Ehe mit Katharina von Aragon zu beenden. Doch der Papst in Rom zögert mit der Einwilligung zur Scheidung. Daraufhin entmachtet er seinen Lordkanzler, Kardinal Wolsey. Ein Konflikt mit dem Papst in Rom scheint unausweichlich.
