-- Anyone reading the Book of Judges soon realises that each account should be read while paying close attention to two things: firstly, its underlying tradition, and secondly, the way in which it was written. The latter willingly integrates legendary motifs into its recollections of the past and borrows freely from Mesopotamian and Greek universal folklore. But that isn't all; following his analysis of the main accounts that constitute this Biblical volume, Philippe Abadie observes that the key to their reconstruction of the Israelite past lies in the life and times of those Biblical writers, and sees this piece of writing as a means of pondering the future. In order to make the to-ing and fro-ing between history and the politico-religious questioning more perceptible, the author has chosen to focus his reading on 'unexpected heroes', and in particular he underlines the importance of the contrast at the heart of the work between the 'judge' Gideon (Judges 6-8) and the 'king' Abimelech (Judges 9). He provides a literal and structured translation that enables each reader to interpret the work in his or her own way, no doubt discovering in the process a book whose ultimate key is not so much to recount Israel's distant past –; a 'period of judges' which preceded that of monarchy –; as to ponder the nature of power itself.
